The Future is Electric

Companies all over the globe are going green and going electric at the speed of light. Car companies in particular, are racing to be the first to market, by offering their own lines of electric vehicles (EV’s) and making bold promises to go fully electric in the years to come.

General Motors has plans to stop selling gas and diesel vehicles by 2035. A household name in the car industry and the top third car brand in the US (1), GM is taking strides to go fully electric within 13 years! Soon, car manufacturers are going to be going all-electric with many making pledges to do this already. Companies like Ford, Toyota and Honda, all have plans to primarily develop and sell EV’s in the coming years.

Ford, the number one car brand in the US, has plans to revive old vehicles by selling smaller electric motors from their all-electric Mustang Mach-E, which can then be used to retrofit cars to become fully electric. In 2021, Ford unveiled a beautiful 1978 F-100 pickup that had been retrofitted with a larger Mustang Mach-E battery, at the SEMA Show. Innovations like these are making EV’s more accessible and affordable to consumers. On top of that, Ford has plans to be carbon neutral by 2050 (2), balancing the production of EV’s and hybrids with gas engines.

Similarly, Toyota, the second largest and most popular car brand in the US, has plans to be carbon neutral by 2050 (3). Toyota also has a target to make 40 percent of its new vehicle sales in the U.S. be EV’s, by 2025. By 2030, their goal is to increase that to 70 percent.

Honda is set to ONLY sell EV’s and Hybrids in Europe following the end of 2022 (4). Similar to GM, by 2030, 40 percent of Honda’s North American vehicle sales will either be electric, or hydrogen-powered. By 2040, Honda plans to phase out the sale of all gas-powered vehicles.

So what does this mean for you?

All new vehicles in the U.S. will be some form of EV, or hybrid. This change also means a shift in the fuel industry. EV chargers will become more readily available, and more affordable to consumers. To that point, the more drivers there are on the road that depends on electricity to spin their wheels, the more dependent on electricity we will be. EV charging stations can take time, hours even, to fully charge a car, so getting your EV charged may become more difficult if you can’t do it yourself. SolarTech can install an EV charging station at your home or business to help alleviate your charging concerns.
